The spring season is a time for clearing out the old to make room for the new. The Earth does it yearly for good health. Flowers grow from underneath the rubble of leaves, new buds grow on lifeless-looking branches, and little birds build new houses. Spring is a magical time when the Earth transforms and renews itself.
Everyone has heard of spring cleaning. Time to clear out the cobwebs, dust off the patio furniture, and de-clutter the house! A time to repair and renew our homes. What about spiritual spring cleaning? I am sure we have some cobwebs in there that need to be removed.
Lent is a great time to do a little spiritual spring cleaning. The 40 days during Lent are used as a time of reflection and time to resist temptation. Just as Jesus did during his 40 days in the desert. The Lenten season leading up to Easter is much like the Earth’s spring. Time for a renewed life and transformation.
But Lent isn’t the only time to work on our spiritual goals. Anytime things aren’t quite right with you or your life. When something big is happening and you have no control of the outcome.
It does not matter what your religion is. We all need to take a step back from time to time to reflect on life, reorganize our thoughts and priorities, and practice gratitude. Gratitude isn’t something that comes naturally to most of us. Usually, we only think about being grateful if prompted by a holiday or a specific event in which something amazing happened. The human brain is wired to remember negative thoughts instead of positive thoughts to prevent us from getting hurt. It’s no wonder gratitude is hard to come by.
But being happy is what most of us seek. In order for us to find happiness, we need to see happiness in our day-to-day things. Learning to be more grateful can have a profound effect on, our daily happiness. Sure, it’s not going to pay the bills or cure health problems, but it will let you see the world with a different pair of lenses.
Ok, so you think to yourself, I say thank you for things every day. I already see good things. What’s the big deal? Or what does saying thanks really do?
We live in challenging times. Sometimes it can be hard to see the positive things in our lives. Over the years, I have come to realize life is more like a mosaic painting. Each picture is a hidden object puzzle. There are days we really have to look hard to see the good we have.
Spiritual spring cleaning! 30 days of gratitude- a path to happiness
Here is a challenge I propose we do. 30 days of Gratitude.
You will need a bible and a notebook, or you can purchase my complete guide here on Amazon.
Each day you’ll have 5 tasks. I recommend you do them in the evening, but whenever it feels right for you is best.
1. Daily reflection- Write down everything you are thankful for today, even the little stuff like a cup of coffee with a friend, the hug you received from a loved one, or the weather.
It can be as big or as small as you want. The point is to try and see all the blessings the day has given you. It is a way of training the mind to see the positives, no matter how small.
2. Sorrowful moments- Write down your worries, troubles, and problems for the day.
Reflect on how you could have done things differently if you could have things differently. Oftentimes, we have more control than we think, and reflecting on the bad things of today can reveal what we should have done.
Warning: Do not make excuses for your actions. Simply know that things went wrong and plan to correct them next time. Let the sorrows go. No dwelling or grudge-holding. It is toxic and will draw negative energy in.
Ask God for help with forgiveness and change.
3. Read a passage from the bible and answer these questions:
Does it speak to your sorrows?
How can it help you?
If you don’t have any answers, that’s ok. The more days you complete, the more chances you will hear, in your heart, what you were meant to. Each of us is different. We will hear different things.
4. Reread what you are thankful for and thank God for his blessings.
Does the passage seem clearer after you reread it, what you are thankful for?
This will reset you back to the positive things in your day. This step is important in improving your positive thinking.
5. Write your prayers for this evening.
When you wake up, reread the things you were thankful for yesterday and try to see more things today.
