How to write a good book description

How to Write a Book Description for Low-Content Books

‘Writing a book description for a low or medium-content book seems crazy. There is only so much you can say about your journal or coloring book. At least that’s how I felt when I first started Salty Inspirations. Getting creative on how you describe a journal may take a little time, but here is one method I find helpful when writing a book description, The AIDA model.

How to write a book description for low-content books

1. Attention – Capture the buyer’s attention

2. Interest – Keep their attention with interesting information

3. Desire – Show buyers what makes your book different and how it will fix their problem

4. Action – Call to action statement

Let’s digger deeper!

To describe your book to a customer you need to ask yourself a few questions. What is the purpose of your book? Who did you create the book for? What problem does your book solve? Use everyday language. Talk to your customer like you are sitting with them. Maybe, you created a journal because you know journaling can reduce stress. And maybe, you have an aunt who loves cats. When looking for the purr-fect gift, pun intended, you couldn’t find one. So you created a cat journal for your crazy cat lady aunt

But what problem did it solve? In the case of our crazy cat aunt, we solve the problem of reducing stress while having a journal that relates to her favorite thing. Cats!

What else makes your book different? Does your book have drawings on the inside? Does your book have words of affirmation? Is your book more than just a cover? Maybe, it has wide lines for children or the elderly to write. Maybe, it has multiple purposes. List them so you can choose what flows best in your description.

Now that you brainstormed some questions let’s write the description

1. Attention- Capture the buyer’s attention

If the problem we solved was stress reduction because journaling is a healthy habit, we could write:

Are you feeling stressed or mentally exhausted?

2. Interest- Keep their attention with interesting information

Do some quick research on the benefits of journaling. We need to speak to the customer’s interest. We could write:

That stress builds up in the body, manifesting itself in physical, emotional, and mental illness.

Journaling is a very effective tool in stress management. When we write about our thoughts or feelings, we can discover the root cause of our problems and begin to heal from them.

3. Desire- show buyers what makes your journal different and how it will fix their problem

Now, we fix the pain point or problem with our book.

Just taking 5 minutes a day to write down your thoughts could be the difference between feeling great or feeling overwhelmed and hopeless. This journal will start you on a beautiful journey toward daily journaling. Each journal page has drawings of cute cats. Color them in or enjoy the fun they bring while writing.

4. Call to action statement

If we have written our description well, our customer is ready to make the change and fix the problem. We could write: Start reducing your stress with this daily journal. The crazy cat lady in your life will thank you!

The book description is done. Now, we want to add a “features” section. Use bullet points to let buyers know exactly what they are getting with your journal.

Here’s an example

Features:

  • beautiful glossy cover
  • 6×9
  • 120 pages
  • wide ruled lines
  • each page has cat drawings and footprints for coloring

Next, let’s add a few keywords so Amazon can place your book correctly and customers know what the book is for. These are not the same keywords you will use in the keyword section of your book setup. These are for your book description section. I like to ask the customer a question and throw in a few examples to help get them thinking about who may enjoy the book.

Who is this book good for?

  • Anyone who loves cats
  • Daily Journal
  • Stress reduction
  • Meditation
  • School notebooks
  • Crazy cat lady gifts

Great Job! You’re finished! Your low-content book description should look something like this:

Are you feeling stressed or mentally exhausted?

That stress builds up in the body, manifesting itself in physical, emotional, and mental illness.
