Today on Salty Inspirations, I’m welcoming Iris March to the blog to talk about her newest cozy mystery, The Corpse by the Creek. In this guest post, Iris shares why amateur sleuths continue to be such a beloved part of cozy mysteries and what makes them so fun to follow from page one to the final clue.
Why Amateur Sleuths Make the Best Detectives
Cozy mysteries are predictable, while telling a different story every time. Cozies contain a lot of the same elements, most notably an amateur sleuth taking down a killer in a small town. Why do amateur sleuths make the best detectives?
In a cozy mystery, we’re expecting a dead body, a cute animal sidekick, plenty of red herrings, and a lady sleuth who maybe just happened upon the dead body and is then thrown into trying to figure out this murder mystery because her best friend is blamed for the crime. Or something rather similar. We know what we’re getting into as readers.
Our sleuth does a better job than the local detective, and we love it. She bends the rules and possibly commits some light theft or breaking and entering to find clues. We cheer her on as she gets away without a misdemeanor. That detective just isn’t doing a good enough job to notice her crimes.
She’s also looking where the detectives can’t. She knows everyone in town because she runs a popular bookstore, bakery, B&B, or a garden center in my Succulent Sleuth Series. She’s out in public, hearing the gossip, and talking to people in the know who just don’t want to talk to that grumpy (although perhaps handsome) detective.
Our main character sleuth also has more at stake in the game than the detective. Her best friend’s character and freedom are on the line (or perhaps her own!). This isn’t her job, but she cares about it like it is. She’s more passionate about solving the crime than the police force. She cares about the community and doesn’t want to tarnish its reputation either. Molly, the lady sleuth in my series, is often concerned about the reputation of the trail running behind her garden center. Why do people keep dying there?
Plus, we all know that an amateur sleuth is just going to be stubborn, nosy, and curious. She wouldn’t be the star of a cozy mystery otherwise. These characteristics are going to really come in handy while sleuthing for clues to find that killer.
Cozy mysteries make readers feel like we could be amateur sleuths ourselves. With some critical thinking skills, the right murder board with red string, stumbling upon the right clues, our best friends at our side, and maybe a cute pet sidekick, we could take down a murderer, too. This is perhaps the best reason we love an amateur sleuth. Cozy mysteries make us feel like we could solve murders just like they do.
My third book in my Succulent Sleuth Series, The Corpse by the Creek, is about to come out. Molly never means to get involved with the murders that keep happening on the trail behind her garden center, but with the help of her twin sister and the garden center cat, she’s been right every time so far. This time, she and her husband find a dead guy in the woods while volunteering with a river restoration group.

Volunteer water sampling. Development deals. A dead businessman in the woods.
While volunteering with a local stream restoration group, Molly and her husband, Scott, expect to end the day with nothing more to show for it than muddy hiking shoes and water samples. Instead, they stumble upon a dead body left in the woods behind the Buckeye Trail. The victim turns out to be Upton North—an unpopular developer with business ties to half the town and enemies to match.
As Molly starts asking questions, she uncovers a web of grudges involving tenants, activists, and business owners. She’ll have to follow clues from forest trails to forgotten basements—and confront just how far greed and intimidation pushed the wrong person too far.
With a busy garden center to manage, and a beloved black and white cat occasionally underfoot, Molly digs into another Succulent Sleuth case where the roots of the crime run deep.
