How to properly spy on your high school algebra teacher

By Amelia Wether

Hi! My name’s Amelia Wethers. You might know me from such books as Murder at First Sight, or the upcoming Possessed by Murder, which is releasing September 2, 2026.

Back in Murder at First Sight, I was coerced into posing as a psychic at the school fair. This was because my bestie, Carolyn, made me do it. Why did she make me do it, you ask? Because one day I asked her to do a tiny, little bit of spying for me, and she was caught. And then got a restraining order. Which, somehow, I got blamed for.

What happened was, our old high school algebra teacher, Mrs. Thompson, was acting fishy, and I wanted to know why. I had overheard her at Brewhaha, the café I manage, talking to someone about her money and how she’d better see them that weekend. Her tone was not very nice.

I decided to spend the weekend hanging around outside her house to see if she left or if anyone stopped by. I was there all day Saturday and most of Sunday, but I had to leave Sunday night to go to a family dinner, so I asked Caro if she would take over for a couple of hours.

By the time I got back, it was chaos! The police were there; the neighbors were all outside shouting. Poor Carolyn was arrested for disturbing the peace. It became a whole thing.

So, I thought I would put together a handy how to properly spy on your high school algebra teacher out there so no one else owes their bestie a million favors like me. Step 1: do NOT wear bright colors Step 2: do NOT wear bright colors Step 3: do NOT wear bright colors Now, before you go spying, you need to know your location. You need somewhere that’s hidden, but you can still see and hear your spyee. For example, my balcony is a great place. I can sit out there with a book and pretend to read as people come and go from Brewhaha, which is below my apartment. For the most part, I can overhear almost everything they say. If they see me on my balcony, they’re going to assume I’m reading the book I have open on my lap. No one ever sticks around to check if I’m turning the pages. Or, when you need to spy on someone in their house (like I was with Mrs. Thompson), you look around their neighborhood for somewhere not easily visible. I lucked out and found a nice spot in the park across from her house that was hidden by some greenery. I could see her house and watch to see whether anyone showed up.

I had such a nice, relaxing time. The weekend was sunny, and I came prepared. I brought snacks and had a good book to read. I’d even “borrowed” my mom’s picnic blanket, so I was comfortable on the grass. No one noticed me the entire time I was there. Not even the cute dog who wandered over to sniff a leaf.

But then my bestie, Carolyn, came to relieve me. This is where steps one through three come in. Do not, under any circumstances, wear bright clothes when you’re going spying. She was dressed in yellow! A bright yellow jumpsuit. Yellow does not blend in with green. Yellow shines through green! She told me it was because she’s “like the sun.” What does that even mean? I can tell you what it means; it means she glowed like a stadium floodlight.

Obviously, Mrs. Thompson saw her and marched right over to demand to know what she’s doing there.

In summary, if you’re going spying, wear neutral or dark colors. Unless you want ammunition to blackmail your bestie for years to come. In that case, yellow works great.

Also, I do not endorse spying. It is not a nice thing to do.

When the wealthy and snarky Summer Foster swans into her tent inquiring about the expected success of her swanky summer party, Amelia’s not prepared for the crystal ball to fill with smoke and reveal the shockingly violent murder of Summer’s husband. It’s a race to the finish, and Amelia will do anything—including pre-dawn hot yoga, adopting her brother’s feral ferrets, missing dessert, setting herself up as bait and making a fool of herself—to stalk a killer.

About JP Bird

JP writes cozy mysteries with quirky characters that make her laugh when they disagree with the laid-out plans for their story and take her on a different path. She lives in Winnipeg, Canada, and hates the cold weather but loves the winter months because they’re a great excuse to hibernate with a cup of tea or a glass of red wine. When she’s not writing or reading, she spends her summers in the garden and her winters plotting how to win her neighbourhood Christmas display competition. They don’t know it’s a competition, but she plays to win nonetheless.
