The Cozy Mystery Tropes That Keep Us Coming Back For More

Cozy mystery readers are familiar with the common tropes—charming towns with way too many murders and gossipy busybodies, the amateur sleuth with a penchant for stumbling over the bodies, lovable pets with lots of attitude and a habit of dropping clues, or maybe a hunky police detective who’s always called to the case. We all have our favorite tropes as well as our not-so-favorite ones, but I believe that when done well, they can all be a lot of fun. And really, whether we realize it or not, these tropes are what keep us coming back for more.
The amateur sleuth who is perfectly imperfect—
The heart of any cozy mystery is the amateur sleuth. They’re not professional detectives or private investigators. More often than not, they aren’t trained to investigate a murder. And this is a big part of what makes them so relatable. They’re regular people with regular jobs and a somewhat irregular curiosity. For better or for worse, they’re perfectly imperfect, and we enjoy seeing ourselves in them.
I don’t know about you, but if I saw a dead body in real life, I’d be calling 911 so fast it would make your head spin. And when it comes to investigating? The police wouldn’t need to tell me to stay out of it! But cozy mysteries give us the chance to solve the puzzle alongside our amateur sleuth—from the safety of home.
In the Camera Club Mysteries, my main character, Bobbie, whose job as a photographer takes her to festivals and events, is often the first on the scene when a body drops. She’s reluctant to get involved. After all, what does she know about solving crimes? But like most amateur sleuths, it’s her empathy for the victim or the friend who’s falsely accused that leads her forward. She makes mistakes. From time to time she stumbles. But justice is served in the end, and we can’t help but root for that.
A charming village where too many murders take place—
I love my fictional village. It’s loosely based on the area where I live. Nestled in the Green Mountains, Stonebridge, Vermont is quaint, it’s charming, it’s beautiful. There’s a coffee shop, the quintessential country market, a lively tavern, and a peaceful village green. Readers tell me they want to book their plane tickets for a visit, but… what’s up with all the murders?
When I first started writing my series, one of my friends said to me, “But Kara, one murder in our village would be unusual. How will you write a series?”
Despite the murders (or maybe because of them), readers enjoy visiting the same community from one book to the next. We enjoy returning to the coffee shop where Rose serves every cup of coffee with a splash of friendly banter, or running to the country market
for a loaf of bread to hear the latest gossip. Returning to the same village book after book feels a bit like going home.
Small town gossip—
But what about all that small town gossip?
For Bobbie, it’s both good and bad. As the newbie in town, she’s fodder for the gossip mongers. Used to the anonymity that’s part of life in a large city, Bobbie is shocked when her name first appears in the town’s gossip rag—especially when they name her as the number one suspect. And then, there’s that one group of judgy women who are less welcoming than she might like.
But where would an amateur sleuth be without those loosely flung bits of information? There’s nothing quite like community gatherings for a bit of eavesdropping. Whether at a festival, the village hangout, or chatting with a local, little bits of information add up to big clues.
Oh, those lovable pets—
Bobbie’s yellow Labrador retriever, Darcy, was never meant to be a sleuth—and for the most part, he’s not. I couldn’t imagine Bobbie without a pet, and so I wrote Darcy into the story. Pets add warmth and humor to the story, especially when they’re full of attitude. Who doesn’t love a cat who snubs their owner for a missed meal, only to purr beside them as they sleep? Or a dog who has the bad habit of misbehaving, only to protect their owner at just the right time?
Darcy doesn’t speak, and he doesn’t find clues. Lovable, dependable, and just a bit naughty, he always wants to be by Bobbie’s side, and he has a keen sense of who can and cannot be trusted.
Colorful sidekicks who feel like friends—
If returning to the same community with each book feels like coming home, recurring characters also have a way of becoming friends. In small towns as well as clubs, such as the camera club, unlikely friendships develop. Each character has their own story, their own set of skills, and their unique personalities. As readers, we come to care about these characters, and return to the series to “see how they’re doing.”
Whether it’s Alicia’s calm practicality, Rose’s exuberance, Penny’s steady presence, Harmony’s serenity, Nate’s steady support, Travis’s snarky banter, Detective Cram’s condescension, or Lester’s grouchy harumphs, the reader gets to know each of Bobbie’s sidekicks in a way that makes them feel like a friend.
Love them or not, tropes keep us coming back for more!
I’ve only scratched the surface about the tropes that keep us entertained. But there’s nothing quite like escaping into the world of a cozy mystery. Whether it’s the protagonist we want to solve the crime with, the quaint community we want to visit, or the sidekicks we actually care about, there’s something special about returning to a mystery series book by book.
