My name is Olivia. At least, that’s what the gunmen who opened fire on me in the desert shouted at me. Honestly, it could just as well be anything else. I’d actually prefer to think them shooting at me was a horrible case of mistaken identity, though that doesn’t seem to be the case, considering I woke in a crushed limo at the bottom of a cliff. Unfortunately, I have no memory of who I am, where I came from, where I was going, or how I ended up crashed in the California desert. I don’t honestly know what I’d have done if the stranger and his dog hadn’t found me. I suppose I might have wandered aimlessly, scared, injured, with no memory of my past. Either that, or the gunmen would have succeeded in killing me.
As it is, I’m forced to trust Caleb Miller, who claims to be an agent with Jameson Investigations, which I’ve never heard of—at least, I don’t think I have. When he offers to fly me to Florida and leave me in the supposedly capable hands of his boss, I agree. Only because I’m inexplicably terrified of going to the police and something about heading to Florida seems right. A memory trying to surface? Who knows? Maybe. Or maybe I just want to get as far from the California desert as possible.
As I approach Florida with Caleb and his K-9 companion, Ranger, the small plane we’re flying in is shot out of the sky. As we plumet toward the forest, I can’t help wondering if I made a terrible mistake—not because I don’t trust Caleb, though hard as I try, I can’t fully, but because now he and Ranger are both in the crosshairs of a killer because of me. I’m beginning to wonder if I’ll ever make it out of this or if I’ll die with no memory of the life I’m leaving behind.
But, for now, I’m trying to hold onto hope. If we can just keep one step ahead of a killer, we may come out of this alive.
