Natural Cough Syrup

This natural cough syrup is excellent for coughs, colds, allergies, and overall immune-boosting health. I think it’s tasty, much better than Robitussin. The kids and husband are on the fence about the taste. They think it’s weird. We all take it when needed.

This simple homemade natural cough syrup is easy to make and has just 2 ingredients. Raw Honey and Onions! What makes this simple cough syrup so powerful?

Raw Honey Benefits

Honey has been used for centuries as a healing agent. Its antibacterial properties keep it in the front of the herbal medicine cabinet line. It’s easy enough to come by, and there is no prep work for it. It’s been used to reduce allergies by helping build up pollen tolerance. It’s soothing to sore throats. It breaks down phlegm and reduces inflammation. It can be placed on sores, bug bites, and hives to ease pain. The list of honey’s magical powers could go on and on. (1)

Not all honey is created equal. Honey that has been heavily refined won’t give you the same healing benefits as its raw, unfiltered counterpart. When purchasing honey, get as close to nature as you can get. Look for local raw, unfiltered honey in a glass jar. Plastic leeches microplastics into the honey, creating a whole different problem.

Local honey is particularly important if you are trying to reduce allergies. The local honey is produced by bees living in your area and using the very pollen you are allergic to. Making its healing benefits better for you.

Onion Benefits for Cough

Onions are a wonderful addition to just about every dish, adding flavor and depth. But onions for healing may seem funny. However, ancient Olympic athletes used to eat them daily to stay healthy. Some athletes today will eat a raw onion a day leading up to the competition to boost immune health.

Onions are anti-inflammatory and are loaded with quercetin, a powerful natural antihistamine. Onions are also a natural expectorant. They are rich in vitamin C and have prebiotic properties. Aiding in digestive health. 80% of the body’s immune system resides in our digestive system.

A healthy gut helps a healthy immune system which helps a healthy you!

Combining onions with honey creates a strong inflammatory expectorant. The quercetin in the onions and the anti-allergen properties of honey make this an ideal allergy treatment. Especially if you develop a cough during intense allergy symptoms. The antibacterial properties of both help to reduce bacterial infections.

Overall, this is our go-to natural cough syrup when we are sick or suffering from allergies.
