I am a Scaredy Cat Who Writes Murder Mysteries

By Elizabeth Pantley, author of Puzzles and Premieres, Book 10 of the Magical Mystery Book Club Series

My kids laugh at me as I hide my face under a blanket anytime I think something scary is coming in a TV show. I refuse to go to the movies if there are any creepy scenes – I won’t even watch the trailers or previews. I won’t read police procedural books, or mysteries that describe the murder in detail. Yet here I am … currently writing my eighteenth murder mystery book in a series that almost always includes a dead body or two.

Do I have multiple personalities? Am I delusional? Is this just a click-bait article to get you to read it? No, no, and no! I’m just super lucky that the cozy mystery genre exists!

Cozies are amazing and maybe a bit confusing to those who don’t love them. How can it be both a “cozy” and a “murder mystery”? We’d never, ever describe a real murder as “cozy,” for heaven’s sake!

Cozies appeal to me – both as a writer and as a reader – because they are puzzling whodunnit stories that engage us to solve the mystery. They don’t reveal the villain until the very end, once we’ve had chance to make our guesses.

Cozy mysteries are always rich in interesting characters. They take place in wonderful settings I’d love to visit. The stories are colorful and engaging.

Cozies provide excellent brain exercise, but never, ever cross the line into gory or truly scary. Yeah, you can read about a body with a knife sticking out if it, lying on the floor in a library – but miraculously, you don’t need to read about the graphic details. Yeah. The guy is dead. Who is he? Who killed him? How did he get here? That’s the fun part – figuring it all out.

Lots of people appear to agree with me. Google Trends says that searches for cozy mysteries have grown as much as ten times since 2022. Millions of cozy mystery books are sold every year. It’s nice to know that I’m not the only one who enjoys a not-scary murder mystery book!

When this club selects a book, magic happens!

This book club does more than read their books – they are absorbed right into the story to become the amateur sleuths! To exit the book and get back home, they need to solve the mystery and reach The End.

In this journey, they travel to a mountaintop ski town to experience the enchanting setting of a famous film festival. They’ll meet movie stars, producers, and directors. They’ll watch a film premiere, go skiing, and eat at fancy restaurants. It’s all very glamorous and exciting – until a famous actress disappears.

The book club is on the case! They discover clues in the most unusual way – by putting together enchanted jigsaw puzzles.

As usual, the club finds plenty of time to enjoy the unique setting of their journey, as they put together the mystery – one puzzle piece at a time.

You are welcome! I loved hearing you’re a scaredy cat, I am too! I don’t like gory or graphic stuff either. Cozy Mysteries are the best!

  1. I am a scaredy cat as well! I love the charming settings and fun characters in cozies. There just happens to be a murder that needs to be solved. They are very popular, which is why so many fans are surprised and disappointed that Barnes & Noble has reduced the space devoted to cozies. Don’t they realize they are losing sales opportunities? When looking through the punny titles and colorful, enticing covers, it is so easy to find books that you just have to read, that you weren’t planning on buying lol.

I feel the same way! I love the charming towns, quirky sidekicks, and I always hope for a little romance, too. But what really pulls me in are the fast-paced, easy-to-read mysteries. Life can get heavy, and cozies bring just the right mix of light, humor, and heart. And yes, those colorful, punny covers are total temptation. Half the fun is picking which one to read next! They’re the perfect escape.❤️
