Today’s guest is Debra Sennefelder, author of A Cultivated Corpse (A Food Blogger Mystery).
Cozy mysteries have a special way of making readers feel connected, not only to the mystery itself but to the places and people surrounding it. Debra shares her thoughts on why small-town mysteries feel so personal and why readers continue returning to those familiar communities book after book.
Why Small-Town Mysteries Feel So Personal
by Debra Sennefelder
One of the reasons I’ve always loved cozy mysteries is because they feel personal in a way that many other mysteries don’t. In a small-town mystery, the crime doesn’t happen in isolation. The ripple effects spread through friendships, families, businesses, and the entire community.
That sense of connection is what drew me to writing the Food Blogger Mystery series set in Jefferson, Connecticut.
In a small town, everyone knows each other, or at least thinks they do. People shop at the same stores, attend the same events, and cross paths every day. There’s comfort in that familiarity, but it also creates tension when something goes wrong. A murder isn’t just a shocking headline. It affects people personally.
I think readers connect with that emotional layer. Cozy mysteries aren’t only about solving the crime. They’re also about relationships, community, and the way people support each other during difficult moments.
For Hope Early, Jefferson is more than simply the setting of the books. It’s home. She knows the shop owners, attends community events, meets friends for coffee, and genuinely cares about the people around her. That’s one of the reasons she becomes involved in investigations. Curiosity certainly plays a role, but so does wanting to protect the community she loves.
Small-town settings also create wonderful opportunities for recurring characters. Readers get to revisit familiar faces with every book. Over time, those characters begin to feel like part of the reader’s own community. I love hearing from readers who tell me they enjoy returning to Jefferson because it feels comforting and familiar.
Of course, small towns also come with gossip, old grudges, and complicated histories. Secrets are harder to keep when everyone knows everyone else’s business. And in a mystery, that creates endless opportunities for conflict.
There’s also something inherently cozy about small-town life. Local bakeries, bookstores, coffee shops, seasonal festivals, and community traditions all help create the warm atmosphere readers enjoy. Even while there’s danger and suspense in the story, there’s still a sense of comfort and belonging.
I think that’s why small-town mysteries resonate with so many readers. They remind us of the importance of connection and community, even when chaos unfolds. At the end of the day, readers aren’t just returning for the mystery itself. They’re returning for the people and the place that have begun to feel like home.
What’s your favorite fictional small town from a mystery series or television show, and what makes it memorable to you?

When the local garden club president is killed, food blogger Hope Early will have to dig through the clues to catch a killer . . .
The Jefferson Garden Club’s annual plant sale is just around the corner, but Hope Early and other members of the club are more focused on the garden restoration project at Ambrose House. The gorgeous landscaping promises to help return the stately old house to its former glory, but rumors are surfacing of unexplained delays and exorbitant costs. Then the club’s president is found dead amid signs of foul play, and Hope can’t ignore the uneasy feeling that the victim was silenced for something she knew about the renovations.
Certain that the solution to the murder is tied to the garden project and the club’s recent financial struggles, Hope begins to go through their books and uncovers more than mismatched numbers. A tangle of transactions points to an intricate embezzlement scheme, but before she can weed out who’s behind it, a local reporter chasing the same story is killed. It’s clear now that someone is dead-set on keeping the truth buried, and Hope will have to unearth a vital piece of evidence before the killer decides it’s time to bury her as well . . .
Includes mouthwatering recipes!
