Solve a Mystery, Stir a Stew: A Recipe from A Dish Best Served Dead by T.C. LoTempio
There’s something about late August that makes me start craving cozy reads and comfort food. The air might still be warm, but fall is peeking around the corner, reminding us of crisp evenings, simmering stews, and curling up with a mystery that keeps us guessing.
Today I’m thrilled to welcome bestselling author T.C. LoTempio to the blog! Her newest Tiffany Austin mystery is filled with food, fun, and of course, a dash of danger. And since no foodie book-inspired celebration is complete without something delicious, she’s sharing a recipe straight from her story: Chef Adelaide’s Hearty Beef Stew.
This is the kind of dish that warms you from the inside out, perfect for when the leaves start to turn or when you need a comforting dinner after a long day. I can already picture it bubbling away in the slow cooker while I’m lost in the pages of a good book.
Here’s the recipe so you can bring a little Foodie Fest flavor into your own kitchen:
Chef Adelaide’s Hearty Beef Stew
Ingredients:
- 2 lbs beef stew meat
- ½ tsp each of black pepper and garlic salt
- ¼ cup flour
- 4 tbsp olive oil
- 3 tbsp cold butter
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 cup red wine
- 4 cups beef broth
- 2 beef bouillon cubes
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 4 medium carrots, cut into cubes
- 1 lb baby Yukon Gold potatoes, halved
- 1 cup frozen peas
- ¼ cup cold water
- 3 tbsp cornstarch
Instructions:
- Cut meat into one-inch cubes. Sprinkle with black pepper and garlic salt, then dust with flour.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet and brown meat on all sides. Transfer to slow cooker.
- Reduce heat and add butter, onions, and garlic to skillet. Cook for 5 minutes. Add a splash of wine, then transfer mixture to slow cooker.
- Add remaining ingredients to the slow cooker (except peas, cornstarch, and cold water). Cook for 7 hours on low or 4 hours on high, until vegetables and potatoes are tender.
- Add peas during the last 15 minutes of cooking.
- To thicken, mix cold water and cornstarch, stir into stew, and cook until gravy thickens. Serve hot and enjoy!
If that recipe whet your appetite, there’s plenty more to enjoy on this book tour. Stop by the other blogs below for reviews, interviews, spotlights, and more delicious fun!

When a food convention turns fatal, Tiffany Austin will have to cook up a scheme to catch a killer . . .The national Foodie Fest is in town and food blogger Tiffany Austin is thrilled to report on the event, even if it means crossing paths with an arrogant and annoying chef from her past. The man can’t help boasting of his success, but he also lets slip to Tiffany that he’s publishing a tell-all memoir that will be filled with scandalous secrets about many people in the food industry. It’s a risky career move, and maybe just plain risky, as Tiffany discovers later that day when she finds the chef’s dead body mere steps from the convention center.
With any number of reputations and careers at stake if the chef’s memoir were ever published, Tiffany realizes virtually everyone at the event is a suspect. Wending her way through the convention crowd in her guise as a reporter, she cautiously questions as many of the participants as she can, hoping to unearth a telling clue or a false alibi. Because while everyone has a skeleton or two in the closet, Tiffany knows someone at the food fest has a secret they’d kill to protect—and would kill for again if she gets too close to the truth . . .
Includes scrumptious Foodie Fest recipes!
