I’m delighted to welcome Celeste Fenton back to the blog today! You may remember her from her previous visit, when we featured Lost Heart in King Manor, the first book in her Mysteries of the Heart series. Today, she’s returning to celebrate Book Two, Captive Heart at Brantmar Castle, and she’s sharing something just as compelling as her fiction. In today’s guest post, Celeste opens up about creativity, courage, and what it means to finally say yes to a long-held dream, no matter your age.

Finding Joy, Purpose, and a Microphone: Why Creativity Has No Expiration Date
By Celeste Fenton
For most of my life, I stood at the front of rooms for very practical reasons.
I taught. I trained. I facilitated. I explained things clearly, efficiently, and with purpose. I loved that work—it mattered. But it wasn’t until later, at the age of 69, that I found myself standing in front of audiences talking about something far more personal: writing fiction, creativity, and the quiet courage it takes to finally pursue what’s been calling you for years.
That part surprised me.
I didn’t set out to become a speaker about creativity. I didn’t wake up one morning and decide, I think I’ll inspire people today. What happened instead was simpler—and more meaningful. I started writing novels. I followed a long-postponed dream. And people began asking questions.
Not just about writing—but about beginning.
How did you start? What made you finally say yes? What does it feel like to create something from nothing? How did you know you were ready?
Those questions opened the door.
The first time I gave a presentation about my writing journey, I expected to talk about craft—plot, characters, revision. Instead, what the audience wanted was connection. They wanted to understand my motivation. They were curious about what nudged me forward, what held me back, and what it actually feels like to sit down and create when you’re no longer trying to prove anything.
I realized, standing there, that my role wasn’t to teach people how to write a novel. It was to meet them where they were—and to honor the questions they were quietly carrying themselves.
What I discovered in those moments was joy. Real, grounded joy. The kind that comes from recognizing yourself in the faces looking back at you. From answering honestly. From saying, Here’s how it started for me—now let’s talk about what’s stirring in you.
I talk openly about my age. I don’t soften it or disguise it. I say it out loud: I just turned seventy. And every time, I see the same reaction—eyes widen, shoulders relax, something loosens in the room. Because if creativity can still be alive in me, then maybe it’s not too late for them either.
That’s when I realized this wasn’t just about writing books. It was about modeling what it looks like to keep choosing growth—and inviting others to imagine what that might look like in their own lives.
Creativity isn’t limited to novels or art or music. It shows up wherever curiosity lives. In starting a business. Learning a language. Returning to school. Gardening. Storytelling. Volunteering. Creativity is simply the act of shaping something uniquely your own—and giving yourself permission to begin.
When I speak to groups, I pay close attention. I listen. I watch for the moment when someone leans forward, when their expression changes, when a question forms before they’re brave enough to ask it. That’s where the real conversation lives.
And when someone says, I’ve always wanted to… —that’s the spark.
Helping people tap into that spark, to see that desire as valid rather than foolish, is where I find the deepest satisfaction. I don’t offer formulas. I don’t promise outcomes. What I offer is reassurance: that the urge to create doesn’t arrive by accident, and that it doesn’t disappear just because time has passed.
We live in a culture that quietly suggests expiration dates. There’s an unspoken belief that after a certain age, you should stop beginning things. Stop risking embarrassment. Stop dreaming out loud.
I don’t believe that anymore.
With age comes depth. Perspective. Patience. Creativity later in life isn’t frantic—it’s intentional. It’s not about proving anything. It’s about expression, curiosity, and meaning.
I also talk about fear—because it doesn’t go away with age; it just changes outfits. Fear of failing. Fear of starting something you might not finish. Fear of wanting too much.
I tell them the truth: I was afraid too. I still am. Courage isn’t the absence of fear; it’s deciding fear doesn’t get to make the final decision.
There’s something profoundly moving about watching someone realize they’ve been waiting for permission that never needed to be granted. That moment—when they smile and say, Maybe I could…—that’s the moment that keeps me saying yes to these invitations.
Speaking has become another creative outlet for me. It connects my past life as an educator with my present life as a novelist. It allows me to give back in a way that feels authentic, relational, and deeply meaningful.
If there’s one thing I hope people take away from these talks, it’s this: there is no expiration date on creativity. Not for writing. Not for dreaming. Not for crafting something that feels uniquely yours.
If something keeps nudging you—quietly, persistently—pay attention. That nudge isn’t foolish. It isn’t indulgent. It’s information.
And if you’re waiting for the “right time,” let me gently suggest this:
The right time might be the moment you finally listen.

About Celeste Fenton
My writing is fueled by a lifelong love of mystery and a fascination with the complexities of the human heart. As a widow, mother of adult twin sons, proud grandmother, dog lover, and semi-retired educator, I believe I have enough real-world experience to weave imagination with insight to create stories rich with emotion and suspense.
When I’m not writing, reading, or plotting another plot twist, I like to explore small towns across America—setting out solo for month-long adventures much to the awe (and occasional alarm) of family and friends. My latest obsessions include escape rooms, mastering the perfect miter cut for a DIY bathroom remodel, training my cavalier spaniel to do a high five, and making the impossible decision of where to travel next.
