Welcome to Salty Inspirations! Today’s guest post comes from Rebecca McKinnon, author of Die to Your Own Tune. She’s here sharing a fun, behind-the-scenes look at the kinds of questions cozy mystery readers are really asking once the official discussion guide is set aside.
The Questions Cozy Mystery Book Clubs Are Really Asking.
by Rebecca McKinnon
Thank you so much for letting me drop in today!
One of the things most cozy mystery readers love is talking about the books. Maybe you’ve even formed a cozy mystery book club where you can see who solved the mystery before the book’s main character. If you have, you’ve probably considered what questions to lead the discussion through when it’s your turn to host.
You might follow the suggestions in the official book club discussion guide. You know, the one at the back of the book with thoughtful questions about themes and character development and the author’s use of symbolism.
But let’s be honest. When it comes to cozy mysteries, those aren’t the questions we actually want to discuss. So let’s look at the questions we really want answered!
Question 1: How is her shop still open?
She’s never there. She’s always out investigating. Who’s minding the store? Who’s handling inventory? When does she restock the yarn/books/coffee beans/whatever she’s supposedly selling? And how is she making rent in a tourist town where commercial real estate cannot be cheap? Does she have employees we never see? Is the shop a front? Is she independently wealthy and just running this place for fun? We need answers.
Question 2: With the first question in mind, what are this town’s actual economic drivers?
Tourism, apparently. But tourism based on what? Charming downtown streets? Seasonal festivals? The suspiciously high murder rate that should have tanked their reputation by now?
Question 3: Why doesn’t she just date the detective already?
We all see it. They see it. The sexual tension is so thick you could cut it with one of the knives from the kitchen where the murder happened. He asks her out. She deflects. He shows up at crime scenes. She ignores him. Just go to dinner. Please. We’re begging you.
Question 4: Is the detective actually interested, or is this just advanced surveillance?
Follow-up question: If he’s asking her out four times in one book, is that romance or is he trying to keep tabs on her so she doesn’t get herself killed? Is this love or law enforcement strategy?
I honestly can’t tell anymore.
Question 5: How many laws did she break during this investigation?
Breaking and entering, tampering with evidence, withholding information from law enforcement, trespassing, theft (she took that letter, didn’t she?). If we’re being generous, maybe
three felonies. If we’re being realistic, probably closer to seven. And yet she faces zero consequences.
Question 6: Is the cat magic, or just suspiciously well-timed?
The cat knocks over the vase that reveals the hidden letter. The cat hisses at the killer. The cat refuses to go near the poison. The cat leads her to the clue. Either this cat has supernatural abilities, or the author is working overtime to make us think it does. Which is it?
Question 7: Why hasn’t everyone moved away by now?
Seven murders this year. It’s April. The CDC should be involved. Tourism should be dead (pun intended). Property values should have tanked. And yet people keep moving there. People keep opening businesses. The population seems stable, if not growing. Why? What are we missing? Is there something in the water? (Besides the occasional body?)
Question 8: How is she not traumatized?
She’s found multiple bodies. She’s been threatened. She’s been attacked. She’s confronted killers in dark alleys. And yet, in the next book she’s totally fine. No therapy. No PTSD. Just back to running the shop and finding more bodies. Is she okay? Should we be concerned?
Question 9: When’s the next one coming out?
This is the most important question. Because despite questionable economics, the criminal activity, the magic cat, and the unresolved romantic tension, we’re going to read it. We know we are. We’re already looking forward to it.
If you think of any I’ve missed, go ahead and add them in the comments! And feel free to use these at your next cozy mystery book club. Or don’t. Use the official discussion questions if you want to feel literary and thoughtful.
But we’ll all know what you’re really thinking about.

After months of giving into her wanderlust, free-spirited violist Octavia Fields is ready to get back to her Aerie Pines music shop. But she hasn’t even had a chance to unpack before running into her teenage nemesis, who’s there to solo with the Aerie Peaks Symphony. Things get even more interesting when Octavia learns the conductor is none other than her ex-boyfriend, who seems to think they’re engaged. After finding her nemesis dead, Octavia jumps barefoot-first into another investigation. But Detective Dreamy isn’t about to let her investigate alone — he knows her knack for attracting trouble. And he wants to keep an eye on the ex who’s twisted being separated for a year into an engagement. When Octavia’s asked to step in as the new soloist, she has to balance investigating with rehearsals. And what should be an honor puts Octavia directly in the spotlight — and possibly the killer’s crosshairs. With tension mounting both on stage and off, Octavia realizes someone might be tuning up for an encore performance. She needs to unmask the killer before the final curtain falls and Octavia takes the deadliest bow of all!
