If These Streets Could Talk: A Word from Apple Station
Apple Station by Kathleen Bailey
You might think it’s unusual to hear directly from a town. After all, most places let their residents do the talking. But around here, I like to believe I’m just as much a character as the people who call me home. My name is Apple Station, and I sit nestled in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
I am small, yes, but never quiet. I thrive on the rhythm of my four true seasons. Spring adorns me in blossoms of every color. The fragrances of mountain laurel and Virginia bluebells drift along every roadside, and the smell of fresh-cut grass lingers everywhere. Summer brings long, golden days and nights lit by fireflies. Tiny tykes carrying melting ice-cream cones are a common sight along my sidewalks. Autumn paints me in gold and crimson while the air turns crisp, tinged with woodsmoke and spiced cider. Winter is pure magic. I twinkle with lights, and all the shop doors are decorated with wreaths and garlands. Carolers stroll the square on December weekends, and if you come at just the right time, you might even catch a glimpse of Santa himself.
At my heart lies the town square, my pride and joy. It’s more than a patch of grass. It’s where friends gather, stories unfold, and life slows down enough for folks to share it together. On any given day, you’ll find people perched on benches with a snack in hand, swapping the latest gossip or simply soaking in the sunshine. There’s always activity here, whether it’s kids chasing each other around the gazebo or retirees debating who makes the best apple pie.
The square also serves as the backdrop for my biggest events. In October, I come alive with the Haunted Halloween Trail. Pumpkins glow in shop windows, and the air smells of kettle corn and mulled cider. Costumed children parade around, picking up candy at stops along the way. Then December arrives, and I sparkle with the Festival of Lights. Fanciful displays delight townsfolk of all ages as they stroll the trail with hot chocolate in hand. The frosty air carries the scent of applewood smoke from the fire pit, and cozy sweaters and warm mittens are a must.
My shops, clustered around the square, are as much a part of me as the people who run them. Tales and Treasures, the local bookstore, is a haven for bookworms. With overstuffed shelves and weekly window displays featuring new releases, local authors, and curated themes, few can resist picking up a new title for their
TBR. Not far away is Jillian’s Cafe, the go-to spot for fresh coffee, scones, and sandwiches that somehow always taste better when enjoyed with friends. And then there’s the Apple Station Inn. The historic building has been standing since long before I was officially a town. It draws tourists eager to sample a bit of Shenandoah charm and is a favorite dining spot, serving hearty regional cuisine.
People sometimes say I feel like stepping back in time, but I prefer to think of myself as timeless rather than old-fashioned. I’m cozy, yes, but never sleepy. This week, for example, I’ve gone Scottish. Just up the road, the Highland Games are being held, and I’ve wrapped myself in tartan to celebrate. The St. Andrew’s Cross, Scotland’s national flag, flies proudly from storefronts and lampposts, and my square has come alive each day with demonstrations of Scottish history and culture. From swordplay to traditional Highland dancing, crowds gather to cheer and clap along. The air is filled with the sound of fiddles, bagpipes, and drums, and if I had toes, I’d be tapping them to the rhythm.
I’ve been home to more than a few unexpected adventures over the past year, some even involving murder mysteries. But at heart, I’m a place of comfort and community. You can always come home here, no matter how long you’ve been away. So while it may be unusual to hear from a town, if you spend enough time in Apple Station, you’ll soon understand that I’ve always had plenty to say.
Wasn’t that a charming glimpse into the world of Apple Station? Kathleen Bailey brings her setting to life with warmth, wit, and a touch of small-town magic that cozy mystery fans can’t resist.

As Olivia investigates, family secrets and surprising motives surface, linking three brooches, an antique cross, and a 17th-century Scottish Bible. Clues connect seven suspects to the crime, and each has something to hide. When her friend can’t be found and the police start asking questions, the mystery hits closer to home and runs deeper than she ever imagined.
After an unlikely witness makes a shocking revelation, Olivia enlists her friends and a heroic search and rescue golden retriever to help her follow the trail before it goes cold. The man she loves is caught in the crosshairs, and to protect him, she’ll have to risk everything. Justice hinges on a missing cat, a chase through the woods, and a stare-down with a mama bear.
