Our January Reset: The 21-Day No Sugar Break My Family Looks Forward to Every Year
Every January, once the holidays wind down and the decorations come down, our house gets a little quieter, and a lot more intentional.
After weeks of celebrations, treats, and sugary foods, we always notice the same thing: how run-down we feel. Sluggish. Foggy. A little off. That’s why, every January, we participate in our 21-day no-sugar reset, a family tradition that helps us start the year feeling refreshed.
The first year we tried it, I was convinced we were setting ourselves up for misery. Sugar is everywhere, not just in cookies and candy, but hidden in breads, sauces, and foods you wouldn’t expect. The idea of cutting it out completely for three weeks felt extreme.
And honestly? That first year was hard.
But something unexpected happened. By the time the three weeks were over, we felt better. Clearer. More energized. Instead of racing back to old habits, we found ourselves saying, “We should do this again.”
Now, several years later, our 21-day no sugar reset is something we genuinely look forward to. Not as a punishment or a cleanse, but as our January reset, a way to begin the year feeling refreshed, steady, and ready for what’s ahead.
Throughout the rest of the year, we try to stay mindful about sugar without being rigid. We don’t avoid it completely, but we do try to steer clear of sugar overloads. When we sweeten things, we usually reach for honey or maple syrup. We never skip celebrations, and we never feel guilty if we enjoy dessert or a special treat. It’s simply about being aware and not letting sugar quietly take over, except during the holidays, of course, when all bets are off.
For us, the 21-day no sugar reset has become a tradition we genuinely look forward to. A shared reset. A quieter start. And, for me, a way to step into a new year and a new writing season, feeling refreshed and ready.
When a sweet craving hits, we reach for whole fruit: an apple, an orange, a banana. No juice. No dried fruit. Just real food, the way it comes.
About a week in, things start to shift. The afternoon crashes fade. Meals feel more satisfying. Cravings quiet down instead of constantly demanding attention. By the second or third week, everything feels steadier: energy, mood, focus. We notice less bloating, fewer aches, and an overall sense of feeling lighter and clearer.
One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that each time we do this, it gets easier. The longer we keep our diet cleaner throughout the year, the gentler the reset feels in January. Our taste buds change a little more with every detox. Foods start tasting naturally sweeter, and many store-bought items now taste overwhelmingly sweet, something we never would have noticed before we started this tradition.
One of my favorite side effects is how food starts to taste again. Without sugar dominating everything, real flavors come back. Vegetables taste sweeter. Simple meals feel comforting instead of boring.
And then there’s the black coffee.
Before this challenge, I couldn’t imagine drinking coffee without sugar or cream. It tasted harsh and bitter. Somewhere along the way, once my taste buds reset, it changed. Now, black coffee is one of my favorite morning rituals. Strong, simple, and energizing. A small reminder of how quickly our bodies can adapt when we give them the chance.
January already feels like a pause between seasons. The holidays are over, routines settle, and there’s space to breathe. Starting the year this way doesn’t feel restrictive, it feels intentional. It sets the tone for the months ahead without asking for perfection.
This is simply what works for our family. If January ever feels heavy or sluggish for you, this kind of reset, even for a few days, might be worth experimenting with. No pressure. No rules. Just curiosity.
For us, the 21-day no sugar break has become a tradition we genuinely look forward to. A shared reset. A quieter start. And, for me, a way to step into a new year and a new writing season, feeling refreshed and ready.
